Campsis radicans, also called trumpet vine and cow itch, is a hardy climber native in eastern and southern United States; it produces terminal clusters of tubular, trumpet-shaped orange to orange-scarlet flowers (see photograph).

Trumpet vine, scientifically known as Campsis radicans, is a deciduous flowering vine native to North America. It is also commonly referred to as trumpet creeper or cow itch vine.

Here are some key features of Campsis radicans (trumpet vine):

  1. Appearance: Trumpet vine is a vigorous, woody vine that can reach heights of up to 9 meters (30 feet) or more. It has a twining or clinging growth habit and produces dark green compound leaves that are pinnately arranged. The flowers are trumpet-shaped, hence the common name, and are typically bright orange to red in color. The flowers are arranged in clusters at the ends of the branches.

  2. Native Range: Campsis radicans is native to the southeastern United States but has been widely cultivated and naturalized in many other regions due to its ornamental value.

  3. Growing Conditions: Trumpet vine is adaptable and can grow in a variety of soil types but prefers well-draining soil. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and can tolerate high temperatures. The vine is drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during dry periods. It is a hardy plant and can withstand a wide range of conditions.

  4. Flowering Season: Trumpet vine typically blooms during the summer months, from late spring to early fall. The vibrant, trumpet-shaped flowers attract hummingbirds and other pollinators.

  5. Uses: Campsis radicans is often grown as an ornamental plant due to its showy flowers and vigorous growth. It is commonly used to cover fences, trellises, arbors, or other structures, providing a striking display of flowers. However, its aggressive growth habit and ability to produce suckers can make it invasive in certain regions. Careful consideration should be given to its placement to prevent unwanted spread.

It's important to note that trumpet vine can spread rapidly and may require regular pruning and maintenance to keep it in check. Additionally, the sap of the plant can cause skin irritation in some individuals, so caution is advised when handling it.
